Updates on Land Purchase

Board Statement of AGM & Land Purchase

On September 30, 2018, the Islamic Association of Saskatchewan (IAOS) held its Annual General Body Meeting (AGM) for 2018 at the University of Regina Education Auditorium. A topic of special importance in this AGM was discussed, is the proposed purchase of land for a new Masjid located at 641 Victoria Avenue East. All members present at the meeting were given an opportunity to ask questions and voice concerns. Topics of particular interest included the relative cost of the land compared to other options, the appropriateness of the location, and concerns of the building on the land having asbestos. Members explored and scrutinized the comprehensive due diligence done by the outgoing IAOS Board. After long discussions, two motions were put forward for all members present to vote on: the first being whether the IAOS should buy the land, and the second whether the building on the land should be demolished once the land is bought. Both motions were successful. Greater than 75% of members in attendance voted in favour of buying 641 Victoria Avenue East and then demolishing the building on it to make way for the construction of a new Masjid.

That the motions not only passed but with an overwhelming majority is a sign of both community unity and trust in leadership, Alhamdulillah. As the incoming Board, our duty is to carry out the wishes of the community and implement the plan to buy and demolish the building. This milestone in the history of the IAOS carries a lot of significance for the Muslim community of Regina and Saskatchewan at large. The need for a larger Masjid capable of accommodating our rapidly growing community has been apparent for many years now. In moving towards this shared vision, we would like to keep the community updated on all significant milestones along the way. Milestones such as when the existing building is demolished, updates on fundraising, and design plans for the new Masjid. We hope that these updates will keep us all unified, engaged, and supportive of one another. We are excited to watch this plan take life and collectively move toward this honourable goal. The first update is that the IAOS has removed the conditions of the purchase on October 30, 2018, with possession to follow by the new year.

As soon as the community can raise the funds required to demolish the building, the building will be demolished. Demolition will cost $145,000. With the generosity of our community, we hope to raise this money soon Inshallah.

Should any member of the community has questions or concerns, members of our Board would be happy to address them. We would like to thank everyone involved for their support, criticisms and suggestions along the way. May the sincere efforts of our community, please Allah SWT and bring us his blessings, bounties and forgiveness.
