  • Fine Option/Community Services

    Fine Option/Community Services

IAOS is proud to announce that it has an approved status to provide Fine Option/Community Services Organization. It provides alternatives to paying a provincial fine.

Alternatives to Paying a Provincial Fine

The Fine Option Program is not an alternative to sentencing but gives people the opportunity to settle fines by doing unpaid, supervised community service work at a rate of $11.60 per hour, rather than paying in cash. The Ministry of Justice works with town councils, First Nations communities, local non-profit organizations or an individual to administer the Fine Option Program in the community under a contractual agreement. These organizations or individuals, called fine option agencies, assign suitable community service work to people who register to settle fines under the program. The agencies also advise the court of the outcome of the assignment.

  • IAOS Funeral Facility Fundraising

    IAOS Funeral Facility Fundraising

The Muslim community in Regina has had to rely on funeral homes to provide services to deceased members of our community and their families. These services are quite expensive and not affordable for many families. An adult funeral can cost a minimum of $6,000 and is increasing in cost each year by about 3% due to inflation. Part of this cost is for the services provided by the funeral home.

To improve community services and decrease funeral costs, the Funeral Arrangement Committee in collaboration with the Maintenance Committee of the Islamic Association, started a project to build a Funeral Facility at the Masjid. Alhamdulillah, this project has been recently completed and we now have facilities in the Masjid to prepare the body of the deceased for burial. The new facility has all the provisions that a standard funeral home should have. Renovations include plumbing, flooring, tiling, electrical connections, closets, and a showering facility. We imported the required equipment including the cooler for the deceased and tables for Ghusl (cleaning) and lifting. In the future, we also plan on having a van to transport the deceased.

The Islamic Association has spent a total of approximately $28,386.00 on this project. We are requesting that the community contribute generously to cover the costs. May Allah SWT reward everyone for their generosity.

Donations can be made at the IAOS Masjid or online.

  • MASJID LOCKUP POLICY

    MASJID LOCKUP POLICY

The Masjid is the heart and centre of a Muslim community. It is a place where Muslims can rekindle their spirituality, meet their fellow Muslim brothers and sisters, and most importantly, strengthen their relationship with the Creator.

As the Masjid is the House of Allah SWT, we are under a duty to treat it with the utmost of respect.

Unfortunately, there have been ongoing issues with damage being caused to the Masjid. This is often caused by playing children and lack of parental supervision of these children. In order to safeguard our Masjid, starting immediately, the Main Hall, Basement Hall & Kitchen, Sister’s Main Hall and an overflow room will be locked nightly one hour after Isha prayer or after the last scheduled event. These areas will be unlocked and accessible again every morning for Fajr Salat.

We would kindly ask that anyone bringing their child(ren) to the Masjid, please supervise them and ensure that they do not cause damage just as they would in their own home. Indeed, the Masjid is deserving of greater care and respect than even our own homes.

We thank everyone for your continued support and cooperation in protecting our Masjid.

  • Updates on Land Purchase

Board Statement of AGM & Land Purchase

On September 30, 2018, the Islamic Association of Saskatchewan (IAOS) held its Annual General Body Meeting (AGM) for 2018 at the University of Regina Education Auditorium. A topic of special importance in this AGM was discussed, is the proposed purchase of land for a new Masjid located at 641 Victoria Avenue East. All members present at the meeting were given an opportunity to ask questions and voice concerns. Topics of particular interest included the relative cost of the land compared to other options, the appropriateness of the location, and concerns of the building on the land having asbestos. Members explored and scrutinized the comprehensive due diligence done by the outgoing IAOS Board. After long discussions, two motions were put forward for all members present to vote on: the first being whether the IAOS should buy the land, and the second whether the building on the land should be demolished once the land is bought. Both motions were successful. Greater than 75% of members in attendance voted in favour of buying 641 Victoria Avenue East and then demolishing the building on it to make way for the construction of a new Masjid.

That the motions not only passed but with an overwhelming majority is a sign of both community unity and trust in leadership, Alhamdulillah. As the incoming Board, our duty is to carry out the wishes of the community and implement the plan to buy and demolish the building. This milestone in the history of the IAOS carries a lot of significance for the Muslim community of Regina and Saskatchewan at large. The need for a larger Masjid capable of accommodating our rapidly growing community has been apparent for many years now. In moving towards this shared vision, we would like to keep the community updated on all significant milestones along the way. Milestones such as when the existing building is demolished, updates on fundraising, and design plans for the new Masjid. We hope that these updates will keep us all unified, engaged, and supportive of one another. We are excited to watch this plan take life and collectively move toward this honourable goal. The first update is that the IAOS has removed the conditions of the purchase on October 30, 2018, with possession to follow by the new year.

As soon as the community can raise the funds required to demolish the building, the building will be demolished. Demolition will cost $145,000. With the generosity of our community, we hope to raise this money soon Inshallah.

Should any member of the community has questions or concerns, members of our Board would be happy to address them. We would like to thank everyone involved for their support, criticisms and suggestions along the way. May the sincere efforts of our community, please Allah SWT and bring us his blessings, bounties and forgiveness.
